Press Release: Tri-County Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Counties of Lander, Humboldt, and Pershing, have launched a planning effort to update the Regional Tri-County Hazard Mitigation Plan. These Counties are vulnerable to earthquakes, drought, flooding, wild-land fires and other disasters. The purpose of the plan is to assess risks to life and property posed by natural and manmade disasters and identify ways to reduce those risks. The plan is required under the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 as a pre-requisite for receiving certain forms of federal disaster assistance. The plan was created in 2014 and must be updated every 5 years.

An update to the Regional Tri-County Hazard Mitigation Plan is being completed throughthe Humboldt County, and the tri-counties’ Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC). Humboldt County is acting on behalf of Pershing and Lander Counties to gather information and input. The Humboldt County LEPC is seeking input from tri-county residents and the public on the Plan.

Additional opportunities for public participation on the Plan update will include a public questionnaire and review and public comments on the draft Plan. All comments received from the public will be documented and considered for inclusion in the Plan. The Counties anticipate submittal of the draft plan to the Board of Supervisors for adoption in 2020 and then expect to submit the final version of this plan to FEMA at the end of 2020.

Public comment and participation is welcomed. Pershing County residents should contact Humboldt County to participate, submit comments, or obtain additional information. Please contact Sean Wilkin, Captain, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Telephone (775) 623-6419, email: [email protected]
